German national soccer players prayed on the field with the members of the Curacao team after beating them Sunday in a FIFA World Cup match, with one player stressing that while they are opponents during the game, they are all followers of Christ.

In a postgame interview following Germany’s 7-1 victory, German midfielder Felix Nmecha elaborated on what happened after the final whistle, where he and some of his teammates were “standing in a circle” with players from Curacao.

“During the game, we are opponents facing one another but after the match, we are all Christians and we are like brothers,” he responded.

“We simply said a little prayer together because we are all still feeling very grateful for everything that has happened,” he added. “Overall, we all believe that Jesus is glorified through the game, and that is why we came together.”

Nmecha, a 25-year-old midfielder for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, has not shied away from speaking about his faith throughout his career.

The athlete’s Instagram page includes the phrase “Football is my passion, Jesus is my foundation” in the biography. Two of the three pinned posts on Nmecha’s Instagram profile show the soccer player giving gratitude to God after soccer games.

The first pinned post, published Sunday, features multiple pictures in both black and white and color, accompanied by a caption reading “Thank You Jesus” along with the hashtag “#TheKingsReturn.” The other pinned post, published in November, shows additional pictures of the athlete on the field along with the caption “thank you Jesus!”

The Christian faith also plays a very important role in Curacao’s national soccer team.

Before the World Cup kicked off earlier this month, players took part in a night of worship, prayer and testimony. One of the team’s players, Kenji Gorre, stepped forward to discuss how faith informs his life and career.

“When you are on the pitch, the world tells you that you depend on your own strength, your talent or fame, but the reality is that without Jesus we are nothing,” he asserted. “Tonight we do not gather as athletes seeking human success, but as children of God who recognize that everything we have belongs to Him.”

Presence Revival, an evangelism and worship ministry that collaborated with the soccer team to put on the event, provided additional details about the atmosphere of the evening in a social media post.

“Before the games, they gave all glory and honor to God,” Presence Revival said of the team. “It was a special night of worship, prayer and gratitude.”

Germany and Curacao are scheduled to compete in at least two more matches in this year’s World Cup, where games are taking place across North America through July 19. Currently, 48 countries are competing in the international tournament, which comprises 104 matches across 16 North American cities.

The teams are currently in groups of four, and the lowest-performing teams in each cohort will be eliminated before the next round of the competition, which is slated to begin in two weeks. From there, the field will be winnowed further until the final two teams standing compete in the 2026 World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 19.
