Bunnie Xo shared her side of the story regarding the recent split from Jelly Roll, claiming the divorce was not mutual and that her singer husband filed the papers after she packed up and left following an argument on Mother’s Day.
During a Thursday episode of her “Dumb Blonde” podcast, Bunnie Xo, whose real name is Alisa DeFord, admitted the couple struggled with having disagreements and often held things back to avoid arguments. The 46-year-old influencer noted this was a “recipe for disaster.”
“We always preach you gotta be comfortable having the uncomfortable conversations, and we did that for eight years in,” Bunnie Xo explained. “Then the past year and a half, we kind of got away from that because we’re in a different life right now.”
The tension between Bunnie Xo and Jelly Roll, whose legal name is Jason DeFord, reached a boiling point on May 10, when an argument broke out between them.
“On Mother’s Day, we had a little bit of an argument, which I don’t think the details are necessary,” she said. “I was so fed up and so tired that I just looked at him and I said, ‘Well, then file the f— divorce papers.’”
“And in our relationship, that is the one cardinal thing that you don’t say,” she added. “Even though my husband has said it numerous times ‘cause he’s the runner.”
According to Bunnie Xo, she then packed a bag, left the house and did not speak with Jelly Roll for a week. The country music artist filed for divorce in Williamson County, Tennessee, on May 18.
The podcast host said the decision was not mutual, and even though she told Jelly Roll to file for divorce, she claimed she was speaking “out of anger and just frustration.”
In the aftermath of Jelly Roll filing for divorce, Bunnie Xo said she has lost 15 pounds and started counseling, in addition to hormone replacement therapy. She also stated she wishes things between her and her husband could have worked out.
“He’s my best friend. I don’t care how f— up our relationship was — which it wasn’t that f— up. I don’t care how much we didn’t communicate or how things shook out. I was riding with this [expletive] till the wheels fell off,” she said. “I didn’t care. I felt like we deserved a chance to go to therapy and figure s— out.”
Bunnie Xo claimed that Jelly Roll did not feel the same way, and she respects that. She admitted it took her a month and a half to come to this realization.
She also revealed she and Jelly Roll are still planning to have a child together.
“You guys are going to be shocked to hear this, but we’re still having a baby,” she said. “We have been the most unconventional couple that you guys have ever encountered.”
The couple was married for nearly a decade before Jelly Roll filed for divorce. The pair met when Bunnie Xo was working as an escort in Las Vegas. They married in August 2016.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Nikki & Brie Show” in March, Bunnie Xo said she and her husband had faced many situations that threatened their marriage. The influencer appeared on the show to promote her book, Stripped Down Unfiltered and Unapologetic.
Before the divorce, Bunnie Xo spoke publicly about the challenges that arose during their relationship, including infidelity, addiction and mental health struggles.
“Relationships are not easy. In the beginning, it was very rough. We were very toxic, and I did lose myself in the beginning of that relationship,” Bunnie Xo said. “And that’s why, when I hit rock bottom, in my book, I write about [what happened] after I discovered my husband had an affair on me for 10 months.”
The 46-year-old remembered holding a bottle of pills and thinking at the time that she could kill herself until something inside of her screamed at her not to do it. She put the pill bottle down and decided to build her own brand so she wouldn’t be seen only as Jelly Roll’s wife, believing she was “meant for more than that.”
“That’s what I felt, and that’s no shade to anybody who wants to just be a wife. I love that for people. But I think my trauma alone would not allow me to just kind of be in the house and not become who I am,” Bunnie Xo said.
“So I did lose myself, and I don’t want people to think I’m always just this strong woman who forges through the fire unsinged because I really have put my hand on the stove and been burned multiple times, and you lose pieces of yourself along the way, but then you pick back up, and you just become stronger,” she continued.
