An Ohio church is mourning the death of Pastor Joseph Stoll, who was killed while cycling on a Delaware County bike path when he was struck by a truck. The pastor is being remembered as “the nicest and godliest man.”
A truck hit Stoll on a bike path along State Route 3 near Big Walnut Road on July 3, according to WBNS 10, which reported that he died days later.
An Ohio State Highway Patrol lieutenant said the investigation into the crash was complete and the agency will make safety recommendations to Delaware County aimed at improving conditions on that trail and other paths in Genoa Township.
Stoll preached at Genoa Church in Westerville, a suburb of Columbus. The church announced his death on July 8, saying a statement that he “graduated to his eternal home in glory.”
“While our hearts grieve the loss of a faithful shepherd, friend, and brother in Christ, we rejoice knowing that Joe is now in the presence of his Savior — the One he faithfully loved, served, and proclaimed throughout his life,” the statement reads. “Today, his faith has become sight.As we mourn together, we also celebrate the sure hope we have in Jesus Christ.”
A memorial service was held for Stoll on July 12.
Throughout his life, he served in many ministry roles, including youth pastor, children’s pastor, and worship leader. He previously served as pastor of Barnett Road Baptist Church and later as the principal of Genanoa Christian Academy.
The congregation has struggled to absorb his loss.
“He’s the nicest, godliest man I’ve ever met,” Scott Lewald, the associate pastor at the church, told WBNS. “It doesn’t feel real. It still feels like he’s going to walk in the door tomorrow and with his smile riding his bicycle and talk about what he ate for dinner last night.”
The congregation takes comfort in the belief that Stoll is now in Heaven and free of pain and sickness, Lewald said. He added that the congregation rejoices for Stoll while grieving the absence of a friend, a co-worker and a pastor who led them.
Stoll played piano and posted food reviews on social media in a segment he called “Reviews with PJ.” Those who knew him said his manner stayed the same whether he was preaching, playing music or reviewing food for his online audience.
A small roadside memorial now stands beside Big Walnut Road in his memory.
Stoll is survived by his wife, Marcella. In the days before his death, the church asked its members to pray for the family and asked that no one visit the hospital while Stoll received care.
Genoa Church directed members to updates on its social media platforms and a dedicated page on its website during Stoll’s hospitalization.
Genoa Township, where the crash occurred, lies along the eastern side of Delaware County. State Route 3 runs through the area and carries a mix of local and passing traffic.
The bike path where Stoll was killed runs near the roadway. The truck driver will not face any criminal citations stemming from the incident, according to WBNS 10.
