As NFL training camps are underway, New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson said Sunday that he is “so weak” without Jesus that apart from Him, he can’t do anything.
In a statement posted on his X account, the second-year running back touted his Christian faith and stressed that God doesn’t necessarily choose the “toughest soldiers.”
“I’ve heard the saying that ‘God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers,'” he wrote. “When I see the disciples that Jesus chose and suffered for His name sake, I don’t see Him choosing the ‘toughest soldiers’, as I learn about men and women in the past and even today who have laid down their lives for Jesus, once again I don’t see God choosing His ‘toughest soldiers.’”
“I see a strong and mighty God choosing weak men and [women], and empowering them by His Holy Spirit to face some of the toughest battles and be used for His glory,” Henderson added. “I once thought I was a ‘tough soldier’ until I met Jesus, then I realized that I’m so weak without Him, and apart from Jesus I can’t do anything.”
The 23-year-old former Ohio State University standout insists that he needs Jesus “daily.”
“[T]he only way that I can truly become who God wants me to be and truly do what God wants me to do, is not by my power not by my might, but only by The Spirit of The Living God.”
He concluded his post by thanking Jesus and included a posed picture of himself wearing his football uniform.
Henderson’s comments over the weekend echo remarks he made when he joined New York Jets players for a moment of prayer following a game between the two teams in November.
“I’m so weak without Him,” Henderson told reporters after the game. “I really mean this from the heart, I can’t do it without Jesus.”
He also spoke about the importance of “trusting the Lord’s plan.”
“[I] continue to do my part and the rest I just leave up to Him,” he said.
The biography on Henderson’s X account declares “Jesus Saved My Life” while clarifying that “Football Is What I Do, A Child Of God Is Who I Am.” The header photo on his account features the phrase “I am nothing without God.” In the pinned post, he identifies himself as “living proof of what the mercy of God can do.”
Expressing gratitude that “Jesus took the old me and he made it new,” Henderson asserted, “that’s what the mercy of God can do.” The pinned post quoted Ephesians 2:4–5, which states, “But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!).”
Henderson shared a New Year’s message citing Matthew 16:24–26, which he summarized as: “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?’”
Henderson participated in the NFL’s #MyCauseMyCleats initiative last December, which allows players to highlight a charitable organization of their choice on their cleats during a football game. Henderson’s cleats raised awareness for Global Christian Relief, an organization that monitors the persecution of Christians across the globe. Global Christian Relief shared images of the custom cleats Henderson wore on its X account, which Henderson reposted.
