Former worship leader and “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Monday for the murder of his wife, Ashley, with an emotional sentencing hearing that featured tearful testimony from family members and a rebuke from the judge for quoting from the Bible as he declared his innocence.
Judge Jeannine Pratt handed down the sentence in a Miami County, Ohio, courtroom after a jury convicted Flynn of murder last week. Pratt accused Flynn of using his faith to “manipulate the lives of others,” while urging Ashley’s family to “remain steadfast in your faith and carry on Ashley’s light in everything that you do.”
The hearing followed a trial lasting more than a week, during which Flynn’s former mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified about messages in which he allegedly expressed a desire to kill his wife while finding a way to “not go to Hell” for it.
Monday’s proceedings also included emotional statements from Flynn and Ashley’s loved ones, some of which were read aloud in court.
Here are six key moments from the sentencing hearing.
