Nearly ninety years after Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean, people are still searching for answers.
Purdue Research Foundation is partnering with the Archaeological Legacy Institute to investigate this October whether an object found in a lagoon near Nikumaroro could be part of Amelia Earhart’s long-lost plane. The expedition will be led by Richard Pettigrew, the ALI executive director. The plan is to investigate the Taria Object, which is a visual anomaly.

In our relationship with God, we are called to seek Him, and He has promised to reveal what we need when we need it. We are made in the image of God. Curiosity is part of God’s nature. He has given us the gift of an inquisitive mind and a world full of mystery. Unpacking God’s mysteries is both a delight and a gift.
The tension we feel is between our desire to learn and the limits of our understanding as humans. In the Bible, we read about great men of faith who had to accept God’s way without fully understanding the reason for their suffering or wondering. Job lost everything he loved and never discovered why. Moses led the Israelites out of captivity but spent many years wandering and was never able to enter the Promised Land. The disciples walked with Jesus but were not able to fully comprehend who he was and what he had come to do until after Jesus died and rose again. Great faith did not allow them to know everything. Their faith led them to accept God’s providence over their lives and trust His plan.
Why Is Nothing Hidden from God?
Psalm 139:11-12 states, “ If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
Nothing is hidden from the Lord. Even as history is full of mysteries that humans seek to uncover, God has none. He sees every story and holds all of life together through his Spirit. There is no place we can hide or be separated from God (Romans 8:38-39).
He knows where every lost thing is. God oversees every forgotten grave. He sees our quiet tears. He observes our secret sorrows. Even when the world has lost sight of us, God has not. Amelia was seen and known by God up until she died, even though she was alone. God never loses sight of His Creation.
Why Trust Matters More Than Having Every Answer
Many of us have lamented over the things we don’t know. If we knew God’s why, then we would have peace. The Bible tells stories of men and women of faith who knew very little about what God was up to, and he asked them to wholeheartedly trust Him.
Abraham met God and was asked to sacrifice his long-awaited son to the Lord. This request was terrifying and made no sense, but Abraham trusted God and followed his instruction, knowing that in the end, the God he knew would provide.
Noah toiled making an enormous boat for a rainless world, preparing for an impossible flood. He was ridiculed and misunderstood, but he never stopped working. His life was saved because of his obedience.
Mary said yes to carrying the Son of God as a virgin. There was no way to explain or make sense of her condition. The world would have believed she was a sinner, all while being honored for her great faith.
These biblical examples of faith all obeyed the Lord without having all the answers. Faith is taking a step towards the Lord when you don’t see what all comes next. Our peace is not rooted in knowledge of all things but in our ability to trust God.
How Can Christians Live Faithfully with Unanswered Questions?
Faith is not living without questions. God allows and encourages us to come to him with our curious minds. We continue to seek his truth. As we learn about our world and each other’s stories, we can also discover more about who God is. Research, science, history, math, arts, and more all reveal more of God’s beauty to the world. As we study the Creation, we learn more about the Creator.
We seek knowledge with peace because we understand that God knows all. We can trust that what he reveals to us helps us to understand Him better. Believers can rest in God’s sovereignty in a world full of mystery, remembering that we have eternity to learn and grow as Sons and Daughters of God.
Amelia Earhart’s story reminds us that humans were made with curious and ever-exploring minds. Maybe in the months ahead, we will finally discover the conclusive evidence we need to write the final part of her story in the history books. But if this exhibition leaves us with more questions than answers, we are reminded that God knows what happened to her plane and never forgot or left Amelia while she was in the land of the living.
Our lives may include unanswered prayers, suffering, and unfinished stories, but as Christ followers, we find rest in the knowledge that God knows every answer, sees every hidden thing, and promises that one day we will fully know Him too! For now, we walk by faith, not because we have all the answers but because we know the one who does.
