Forgiveness and a call for grace from the widow of beloved Georgia high school teacher Jason Hughes have prevailed as prosecutors dropped all charges against five students who were involved in a junior-senior wars game that led to his death.
Hughes, the beloved 40-year-old math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, died on March 6, after he slipped on wet pavement and was accidentally run over by his student, Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18.
Wallace was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering. Four other students, all 18, were also at the late teacher’s home: Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque and Ariana Cruz. They were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Graham McKinnon, the attorney for Wallace’s family, told ABC News that the Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office dropped the charges against him and the other students involved.
“Jayden Wallace and his family first want to thank Laura Hughes for her remarkable compassion and spirit of forgiveness in the face of the tremendous loss of her husband, Jason Hughes,” McKinnon said in a statement.
“District Attorney Lee Darragh was able to act swiftly because the facts and circumstances are not in dispute,” McKinnon continued. “As he was leaving the home, Jayden never saw Mr. Hughes, and Jayden’s vehicle had only traveled a few feet when the accident occurred … In the end, there was no crime — only an extremely sad and devastating accident.”
“Jayden is still grieving deeply but is determined to move forward eventually to live a life that would make Jason Hughes proud,” McKinnon added.
The dismissal came after Laura Hughes, also a longtime math teacher at North Hall High School, asked that the students be given grace for the death of her departed husband.
“There was no ‘confrontation.’ Jason knew the students were coming, and he was excited and waiting to ‘catch them’ in the act. It had been raining, and he accidentally slipped and fell into the road in front of the vehicle as they were driving away and was hit,” she said in a family statement.
“The students immediately tried to provide aid until paramedics arrived. Jason loved these students, and they loved him too. Our family fully supports getting the charges dropped for all involved. This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” the statement added. “This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”
Jason Hughes was well-known for his faith and was celebrated as a “great man of God” by some who knew him. His memorial service was held at the Family Church in Gainesville on March 14, according to an obituary.
In an earlier statement cited by The Christian Post, Wallace promised to live a Christian life to honor the late teacher.
“I pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ,” he said. “He will never be forgotten.”
