Bunnie Xo reveals they’re having a baby despite divorce: ‘We’re unconventional’
Musician Jelly Roll is opening up about his pending divorce from wife Bunnie Xo, telling fans that despite the end of their marriage, the two remain “best friends.”
Jelly Roll discussed his pending divorce from his wife of nearly 10 years, Bunnie Xo (Alisa DeFord), at a concert last week. As the singer spoke, he wore a shirt featuring a reference to the Bible verse Proverbs 18:24, which says: “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
“Me and my wife are best friends,” Jelly Roll proclaimed. “We will always be best friends. We just got off the phone earlier today. Nobody cheated on nobody.”
He went on to say that Bunnie Xo’s recent comments about their relationship were accurate.
“Every word” she shared on her podcast was “the truth,” he said.
“This is the only time I will ever speak about it,” he continued before directing a message to his soon-to-be ex-wife: “Bunnie, I love you, baby. Thank you for those 10 years. They were incredible. Thank you for the next 10 years of friendship and 20 beyond that.”
Jelly Roll’s comments came days after Bunnie Xo discussed the couple’s separation on an episode of her “Dumb Blonde” podcast.
“On Mother’s Day, we had a little bit of an argument, which I don’t think the details are necessary,” she explained. “I was so fed up and so tired that I just looked at him and I said, ‘Well, then file the f— divorce papers.’”
Although she left the couple’s home and didn’t speak to Jelly Roll for a week, Bunnie Xo said she never truly wanted the marriage to end and made the statement “out of anger and frustration.”
Like her husband, she described their relationship in terms of friendship.
“I don’t care how f— up our relationship was — which it wasn’t that f— up. I don’t care how much we didn’t communicate or how things shook out. I was riding with this [expletive] till the wheels fell off,” she added. “I didn’t care. I felt like we deserved a chance to go to therapy and figure s— out.”
While acknowledging that the marriage may be ending, Bunnie Xo suggested their relationship is far from over.
“You guys are going to be shocked to hear this, but we’re still having a baby,” she announced. “We have been the most unconventional couple that you guys have ever encountered.”
The divorce comes as Jelly Roll has become increasingly outspoken about his Christian faith.
During an acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, he credited Jesus Christ as well as his wife with changing his life. “I would have never changed my life without you. I’d have ended up dead or in jail. I’d have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus,” he asserted in a message to his wife at the awards ceremony. “I thank you for that.”
“There was a time in my life, y’all, that I was broken. That’s why I wrote this album. I didn’t think I had a chance, y’all. There was days that I thought the darkest things. I was a horrible human,” he recalled.
As he held a Bible in his hand, Jelly Roll reflected on his previous incarceration: “There was a moment in my life that all I had was a Bible this big and a radio the same size and a 6-by-8 foot cell. And I believe that those two things could change my life. I believe that music had the power to change my life. And God had the power to change my life.”
“I want to tell y’all right now, Jesus is for everybody,” he declared. “Jesus is not owned by one political party. Jesus is not owned by no music label. Jesus is Jesus, and anybody can have a relationship with Him. I love you, Lord.”
