Children’s rights advocates and social media influencers are shedding light on the alleged background of the “Squatty Potty” toilet stool creator after he was charged with allegedly obtaining child sex abuse images. Some are accusing the inventor of having sexualized children long before these charges came to light.

Robert “Bobby” Edwards, 50, allegedly bought and knowingly received sexually explicit images and videos of children between March 2021 and November 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced on Monday. The entrepreneur was indicted by a federal grand jury on Feb. 10 and arrested on Feb. 12 in Washington County, Utah.

Edwards pleaded not guilty during his initial court appearance, and a federal judge in St. George remanded Edwards to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service. The “Squatty Potty” creator is being held without bail and has a hearing scheduled for March 2 at a courthouse in St. George, according to the attorney’s office.

In light of the charges against Edwards, Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, highlighted a “Squatty Potty” commercial in a Wednesday X post. The commercial shows children eating rainbow-colored ice cream (meant to symbolize feces) that came from a unicorn using the toilet stool.

“Edwards is ‘partnered’ to a man and is a ‘co-parent’ to four children, according to his profile on Southern Utah Cares,” Rugg shared in a separate post on X Wednesday. “During his appearance on Shark Tank, Barbara Corcoran said there was something about Edwards that felt off to her.”

Them Before Us Executive Director Josh Wood also addressed the “Squatty Potty” commercial in a Wednesday X post, saying that Edwards “sexualized children in plain sight.”

“Watch the ad. A man serves children feces-shaped rainbow soft-serve, they eat it gleefully, and he wipes it off their faces with toilet paper,” Wood stated. “42 million views. Nobody blinked.”

Wood also expressed concern in a follow-up X post about Edwards’ four children, questioning how they came to be in his care, suggesting the possibility of surrogacy, adoption or “some other arrangement.”

“Data is clear: children are safest with their biological mother/father,” Wood asserted.

“That is why, in adoption, we screen adults BEFORE placing the child. We do follow-up visits. We require accountability,” he continued. “Why don’t we require the same for children obtained through surrogacy or other means?”

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Edwards was later identified as a participant in a group chat used to trade child sex abuse material after an undercover FBI agent joined the online meeting room in March 2021. The participants in the meeting were visible, according to the report.

In May 2025, the FBI reportedly learned that Edwards purchased additional child sex abuse material via his PayPal account. When law enforcement executed a search warrant at Edwards’ home on Nov. 4, 2025, authorities said they found a cell phone in his vehicle that “contained multiple videos and images of child sexual abuse material, some of which [were] downloaded onto the cell phone just two weeks before the search warrant was executed.”

Investigators said that they also seized devices in Edwards’ home and discovered additional child sex abuse material files.

The company Aterian, which acquired the “Squatty Potty” brand in 2021, told The Christian Post that it has “no affiliation, partnership, or ongoing relationship with Mr. Robert Edwards.”

“Following the completion of that acquisition, all associations with Edwards and his family ceased,” Aterian stated. “He is not an employee, a partner, or a stakeholder in our company.  Any claims to the contrary are categorically false.”

“We are deeply disturbed by the indictment against Edwards. The nature of these allegations is abhorrent and wholly inconsistent with our company’s values,” the company continued. “While the family was previously referenced on our website in a historical context, we have removed those references. They have no role in our brand’s present or future.”

“Aterian remains committed to the mission of Squatty Potty: improving digestive health for our consumers,” the statement concluded.
